Frequently asked questions
Adoption is different from fostering, which entails the child being cared for by another family temporarily. Usually this is used when a child is deemed ‘at risk’ by social workers. The court will remove the child, monitor the situation and re-evaluate after 90 days. There will be conditions for the birth mother to meet before being able to take the child back, otherwise another plan will be made for the child. Unfortunately fostering is not often considered in the case of a newborn, due to the attachment and bonding that happens from birth. Fostering is more common for older toddlers and children, who have difficulties at home.
